Simpson Secures Funds for CSI Jerome Education and Training Center

Washington, D.C. – Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson today highlighted the inclusion of College of Southern Idaho’s (CSI’s) Jerome Education and Training Center Project in the FY23 Omnibus package that was signed into law December 29, 2022.

The project was included in the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill at Congressman Simpson’s request through Community Project Funding (CPF).

“Contrary to the claims of CPF critics, congressionally directed spending is not more spending.  It is simply a way for Members to prioritize carefully vetted projects in their own districts within existing budget limits,” said Simpson.  “Failing to advocate for specific projects in your own district does not decrease federal spending; what it does is give more power to states like California and New York who will gladly pick up the funds on taxpayers’ tabs.  Personally, I would rather fight to bring those tax dollars back home to support communities like Jerome than to federal agencies to distribute in other states.  It is possible to advocate both for Idaho and for responsible levels of federal spending.”

The $3.3 million in funding is designated to construct a new education and training facility to support regional needs for the College of Southern Idaho (CSI) in Jerome, Idaho.  The Jerome Education and Training Center will be a 20,000 square foot facility in downtown Jerome, Idaho.  Jerome County has experienced record-setting growth in the food processing, dairy, and meat processing industries.  The growth of the industry needs has guided CSI to plan for an education and training facility to support regional workforce development.  Beyond food processing related training and instruction, CSI intends for the Jerome Center to also support healthcare training for high school students and others in the community.  In support of regional needs, the center will also serve as a community hub supporting CSI’s role as a Hispanic Serving Institution.

“Jerome has become a critical hub in the production of agricultural goods in southern Idaho, and the region needs a workforce ready to meet its economic demands,” said Simpson.  “I’m proud to support CSI’s new Education and Training Center and the work they are doing to ensure that Idaho continues to be a national leader in dairy and other agricultural markets.”

“As a new member of the Jerome community, True West Beef is keenly aware of the critical role that CSI plays in economic development, workforce education, and in enhancing the quality of life of residents of Magic Valley.  True West Beef would like to thank Congressman Simpson in securing this vital funding to help CSI construct a new Education and Training Center in Jerome.”  -Jay Theiler, Agri Beef

“The College of Southern Idaho’s new Jerome Education and Training Center will have a tremendous impact on our community and our downtown corridor.  We’re grateful for the funding that has turned this project into a reality.” -Jerome Mayor Dave Davis
